Beauty*, 17, lives with her sister and parents in Lusaka, Zambia. The water and sanitation facilities in their area are very poor, resulting in a high risk of water-borne diseases like cholera. At the beginning of 2024, Lusaka was experiencing its worst cholera outbreak in 20 years. To try and contain the spread, all schools remained closed and Beauty’s parents couldn’t work. Save the Children provided Beauty’s and many schools with chlorine, handwashing sets, soap, hand sanitizers, waste bins, and disinfectants to help schools keep students safe and stay open during cholera outbreaks.
